This night, two weeks from now, Kilkenny city welcomes a brand new music series with the arrival of Live at Castle Mills to the city centre.
Located on grounds running adjacent to the Canal Walk in Kilkenny, just beyond the walls of Kilkenny Castle, the series is a new addition to Kilkenny’s musical calendar and will bring a big top experience to the city for the first time.
Rather than being billed as a weekend event, or sold as a weekend/festival style series, it’s very much a curated series with individual lineups on each of Friday 17 and Saturday 18 of July.
The Friday night will be headlined by Public Image Ltd (PIL), fronted by John Lydon (The Sex Pistols), with Northern Ireland’s finest Ash in support and Kilkenny’s Kerbdog opening the bill – the band intstrumental in coordinating the series and adding a local flavour to the opening night.
Saturday night is a big one for fans of The National with the Grammy Award-winning band’s frontman Matt Berninger topping the bill, joined by Lisa O’Neill while another Kilkenny favourite – Engine Alley – get proceedings underway.
PIL’s summer tour has been adjusted, with scheduling issues leading to the cancellation of dates in Cardiff (announced last month) and Salisbury City Hall (announced today for 15 July), though the band have already confirmed their Kilkenny appearance is going ahead as planned.
Additional tickets are available for an exclusive VIP soundcheck party with Matt Berninger ahead of his appearance on the Saturday night including a 20-minute 3-song set, meet and greet, photo opportunities and an autographed poster.
The setting couldn’t be any more central, located within a few minutes walk from Canal Square, back along the river, in the shadow of Kilkenny Castle. The big top setting is taking a “comfort-first” approach, designed with a clear layout and calmer crowed experience in mind with organisers saying it’s “built for enjoyment, not endurance”.
Tickets for both nights are available online at CastleMills.ie.
