Gang of Three – Mark Kermode, Simon Booth and Stephen Hiscock – are bound for Kilkenny this September.

The post-punk trio, a tribute to Leeds-founded post-punk outfit Gang of Four, are on a mini-tour of Ireland this autumn, performing Gang of Four’s debut album Entertainment in full.

The album was ranked by Rolling Stone as the fifth-greatest punk album of all time, while also finding a place in the magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Pop Matters took things a step further in 2020 by declaring Entertainment as the ‘best post-punk album ever’.

Film critic and broadcaster Kermode trades media duties for a night of noise at Billy Byrne’s on 12 September.

The venue was also announced in recent weeks as one of the recipients of this year’s Grassroots Venue funding, providing a €20,000 windfall for supporting the programming of upcoming music and comedy acts and homegrown talent.

Gang of Three were on Irish shores at the start of the year, Kermode on bass, Booth on guitar, with Hiscock on drums, the sound, spirit, and message of Gang of Four back to life on stage. When they make the trip to John Street, expect an evening of searing riffs, infectious grooves, and thought-provoking lyrics that feel as relevant now as they did four decades ago.

Kilkenny is the last date on the mini-tour, preceded by a show at Róisín Dubh in Galway (10 September) and The Deers Head, Belfast (11 September).

Tickets for the local date are on sale now via billybyrnes.com.
