Happy Christmas From Us

Katie Kim at Kilkenny Artrs Festival in 2009

It’s only when you get to sit down at the end of the year that you realise you’ve actually done quite a lot in twelve months. Between the ‘Sessions, ongoing involvement with the Kilkenny 400 celebrations, recordings, conferences, gigs, videos, jobs and college, it’s been a pretty busy year offline, thankfully a lot of what we were doing under the KKM banner feeding back into the site.

It’s also been another great year for music locally. Releases from Reko, Saving J, Von Bizmark, The Lions Mane, South, Bob’s Your Uncle, Chemical Addiction, Clive Barnes, The River Valley Band and a whole host of others; the Rhythm & Roots Festival, the Arts Festival, Rockfall Festival; a large influx in big name bands through Cleere’s, Kyteler’s, Ryan’s, and the new Set Theatre which managed to pick up the IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year award for rest of Leinster.

And it is just that, the end of the year. There’s a few days off (as the Twitter stream would show from some random office Blipping during the week) with everyone away to their own devices during Christmas.

In the New Year we get to sit down again and plot out a fifth year of music which will start off with the 2010 calendar of the One Take Sessions from Spring onwards and a slight shift in direction for KKM.com itself. Fun times.

In keeping things brief – to everyone who continues to read the site, contribute on forums, send in their demo CDs (for a podcast that it hoping to be resurrected after the holidays if Ross has his way), all the musicians we had at this year’s One Take Sessions, all the acts involved in the Busker 2009 competition and everyone we’ve crossed paths with over the year, have a happy and music filled Christmas and we’ll do it all over again in the New Year.

Have a good one…

Rescheduled Plinth Gig Tonight

Plinth

Plinth, who due to car trouble had to postpone their October date, will make it to Kilkenny tonight as they take to the stage in Cleere’s from 9pm tonight.

Plinth was formed when Dan, Brian and Joe, who had been jamming together for months recruited Emmet to provide some accompaniment to Dan with his guitarness. For the first few weeks our jam sessions consisted of covers of bands such as Metallica, Alice in Chains and Tool, and eventually Emmet was appointed High Chancellor of Vocals due to his distinct ability to make noises with his mouth. But we soon grew tired of covering other bands and decided to have a stab at writing our own stuff. Fast-forward a couple of jam sessions later and our first song Knwaaybe was born. Since then we have expanded our horizons and our bumholes to the hugest of extents, branching out past a metal or rock sound into schizophrenic genre-hopping tracks such as Thrike and Skynethwayer. With the recent addition of a synthesizer, our sound has now become much like a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, with odd song structure, time signatures, polyrhythms, harmonies and merging of genres such as metal, jazz, eastern music, drum agus bass, fusion, surf rock and minimalist techno to name a few. In early 2008, Plinth were named as one of five finalists in the Eircom Unsigned Bands Competition with our track Eakombookom.

Tonight marks Plinth’s debut in Kilkenny and admission is a mere five euro including a free copy of their new Tenzuke Chiste EP.

Joining Plinth are South, the local three-piece having gigged recently in Cork with Plinth. Their debut album Insula, well received in local circles, is available on the night and also via the band’s MySpace. Last year’s Battle Of The Bands winners released their debut album this past July alongside The Lions Mane’s Strands, which will also be available tonight.

South, Chemical Addiction for King of the Castlepalooza

King of the Castlepalooza

The ongoing King of the Castle contest that’s running in Kilkenny as a fundraiser for local charities brings some music to their calendar this weekend with their own ‘King of the Castlepalooza’, an all ages event being held in the Ormonde Hotel this Sunday.

The day is being run for the Dicksboro GAA club’s candidate Michael Devane in association with The Ger Devane Memorial Fund, The O’Neill Centre (Enable Ireland), St. Canice’s Homes for the Elderly (Troy’s Court), The School of the Holy Spirit and St. Mary’s Day Care Centre (Haughney Green).

On the bill this Sunday are Road Trouble, Bob’s Your Uncle (who recently launched their debut EP), Chemical Addiction and the 2008 Battle of the Bands winners, South, who launched their debut album Insula this summer.

Tickets, priced €10, are available from Rollercoaster Records on Kieran Street or on the door. Pre-paid tickets include a ticket for a raffle at the gig.

Kickoff on Sunday is 2pm.

Editor’s note, post event – King of the Castlepalooza has nothing to do with, or no association with Castle Palooza Music & Arts Festival. For details on Castle Palooza, celebrating their 5th birthday in 2010, visit Casltepalooza.com.

Oliver Dawson Saxon, ITF, South For Ballykeeffe

odsaxonIt’s about that time of year when Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre gets invaded for a night of metal and rock, tonight being that night with Oliver Dawson Saxon, Itchy Trigger Finger, South and more making the trip to the outdoor venue on the outskirts of Kilkenny.

Saxon is one of the original iconic bands of the heavy metal genre. Formed in Barnsley, England, in 1979, the group evolved from a band rejoicing in the name Son of a Bitch (SOB) that was formed in 1976 by Steve Dawson and Graham Oliver.

In 1979 the band landed a publishing deal with Carrere Records, a French label that was starting out in the UK. The release of their first single ‘Big Teaser’ followed to critical acclaim and drew the attention of the music press. Carrere soon recommended that they adopt the name Saxon and the self-titled album was released the following year. It was notable that the band possessed an ability to pen melodic metal anthems with great ease according to Essi Berelian in the Rough Guide to Heavy Metal (2005). In 1980 the Wheels of Steel album, produced by Pete Hinton, was released and reached the top 5 of the UK album charts. The song itself, ‘Wheels of Steel’ reached numbers 20 and 13 respectively in the top 20 at the time. ‘Strong Arm of the Law’ was soon released from the eponymous album followed by ‘Dallas 1 PM’.

A key moment in their career was their performance at the very first UK Monsters of Rock festival at Donnington Park. The performance, which set the place alight, led to them being invited back — the first band ever to play the festival two years in a row. Denim and Leather followed the next year during which Pete Gill injured his hand and was replaced by Nigel Glockler. Around this time, the assault on the US commenced. Opening for AC/DC, Rush, Black Sabbath, and Blue Oyster Cult, their performances drew critical acclaim.

Itchy Trigger Finger

ITF possibly last played Kilkenny (and Ballykeeffe at that) for the same date last year. Over the past twelve months the band have gone without a live show on home soil, instead, busying themselves with writing, recording and getting set for a selection of gigs this autumn. Tonight marks the return of ITF and with gigs lined up in Dublin, Kilkenny (Cleere’s on September 12th), Belfast, Offaly, Limerick and more, it will be good to see the band back on the road and interesting to see how their progressive metal stylings have developed over the last year.

South

Also on the bill for the first time are South, currently touring to promote the release of their debut album, Insula. The band played a packed house at Cleere’s Theatre late last month before launching Insula proper at Whelan’s in Dublin. They’re also taking to the road with dates lined up in Cork, Dublin and Waterford between now and September. You can check South out online at MySpace.

Busses last year were running from town out to Ballykeeffe, tickets for the show featuring all three bands (and a few more) are priced just €10. If anyone making the gig has photos or video to share afterwards, please let us know!

The Lions Mane, South Attack Dublin Tonight

The Lions Mane release Strands

The Lions Mane and South, two Kilkenny bands on the rise, join forces to play Whelan’s in Dublin tonight to mark the physical launches of Strands (The Lions Mane) and Insula (South). Both bands played a warm-up gig on home soil last weekend, filling the back room of Cleere’s with South distributing advance copies of Insula ahead of tonight’s official launch.

Strands, The Lions Mane’s debut album, had an online release almost two months ago but demand for the album has resulted in a limited edition physical release of the recording, produced by frontman Alan Dawson. Fans of the ‘Mane who cannot make the Dublin gig tonight but wish to get their hands on the CD should leave a comment here or get in touch with us and we’ll make sure one gets placed in your hands.

As mentioned, those who paid a visit to Cleere’s last weekend found they were able to get their hands on Insula, the debut offering from South. The album release comes off the back of South winning last year’s Battle Of The Bands where they put their recording package with The Mill Studios to good use resulting in the release of Insula, the making of which has been documented well by Ross Costigan.

Doors open tonight in Whelan’s at 8pm with Sticky Digit as guests on the bill. Admission is 8 euro. For more, check WhelansLive.com.

The Lions Mane, South at Cleere’s

The Lions Mane and South join forces tonight in Cleere’s in advance of the official album launch for both bands’ debut offerings, taking place in Whelan’s in Dublin next Friday night. Joining them on the bill tonight are Tame, also getting set to release their debut album.

Formed in June 2008, grunge rockers South went on to win the Hype Entertainment Battle Of The Bands just three months later. The current line-up consists of Thomas Donoghue (vocals, guitar), Ken Farrell (bass) and Alan Dawson (drums). Using a diverse mixture of influences, the trio have combined the vocal elements of bands like the Stone Temple Pilots & Pearl Jam, with the modern alternative sounds of Incubus and the guitar styling of John Butler Trio.

In April 2009, the band recorded their debut album ‘Insula’ in the Mill Studios, Kilkenny. Due for release on July 31, the album is a polished blend of melodic and sincere vocals; mixing mellow acoustic and crunchy electric guitars with fluid bass-lines, reinforced by percussive grooves.

The Lion’s Mane began as an online experiment; releasing tracks anonymously through online social network MySpace.com. The demand for gigs led to several successful live performances in Kilkenny and Dublin in 2008 before the Lion’s Mane returned to the studio to record debut album Strands. Drawing influences from a wide range of genres stemming from the progressive sounds of 70s bands like Yes and King Crimson to the roots reggae style of Steel Pulse, whilst combining the raw grunge of 90’s Seattle bands, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, with the modern day sounds of The Mars Volta and Tool.

The above video is the third installment of South’s ‘Making Of Insula’ series, cut together by Ross Costigan. You can check it out again here on YouTube or if you missed episode one and two, grab them here and here.

The Making Of Insula – Episode 2

Fresh from their appearance at last night’s One Take Sessions, here’s the second installment from South looking their making of debut album Insula.

South & The Lions Mane play Cleere’s Theatre on Saturday July 25th before heading to Whelan’s in Dublin on Friday July 31st to mark launch of debut album Insula.

One Take Sessions – TONIGHT

South (Photo by Ross Costigan)

The One Take Sessions return for their July outing tonight in the recently re-decorated back room of Cleere’s Theatre, bringing along four acts for the night including Fia Rua, Roy Shiels, Walkperson and local band, South.

A newcomer to the One Take Sessions, Eoghan Burke aka Fia Rua, sings his own songs, usually with people playing along. He likes “having a big sound live, but also really enjoy the intimacy of doing it alone or with a fiddle player.”

Originally from Kildare and a drummer in a former life, he took a holiday to Kinvara in Galway some ten years ago, and never returned, instead turning to writing and performing on guitar, drawing on influences between the lines of the Pogues and Nirvana.

“My songs are about all sorts of things, usually the story or feeling comes very suddenly then builds, sometimes a song could evolve continuously, with other people adding their pieces. I believe this music is the only thing that I know will never leave me while I’m alive and well on planet earth.”

Roy Shiels is a 28 year old multi-instrumentalist & songwriter from Rush, north Co. Dublin. He draws upon influences such as Smashing Pumpkins, Beach Boys, Slint & Talking Heads and has honed his craft as a songsmith in various cover bands as a professional musician since the age of 22.

His live shows are represented as solo acoustic and electric band performances, with accompaniment from Charles Byrne (bass) and Declan Doyle (drums). His intimate Dublin shows feature french-born cellist Sofiane Mebarek and Róisín Dexter on violin. For more on Roy, visit myspace.com/royshiels.

He’s spent time in London, lived in France, lived in Canada, recorded an EP in Quebec, performed with Socialite (Sligo), Thy Swan Army (Galway) and last year he made his OTS debut. So it’s a welcoming thing that Pearse McGloughlin, plying his trade as Walkperson, makes a return to the back room of Cleere’s to promote of the release of debut album, Busy Whisper.

Native of Sligo and now resident in Dublin, Pearse McGloughlin
creates beautifully haunting songs of forgotten moments and quiet reflection. Dreamy and atmospheric, his work has an organic aesthetic reminiscent of Mazzy Star or Grand Salvo. He’s already released the single, Changeling, from the new album earlier this year and according to his critics, great things are both promised and expected from him. You can sample Walkperson in advance of Thursday night by visiting myspace.com/walkperson.

Topping the bill at the ‘Sessions are Kilkenny’s own South. Winners of last year’s Battle Of The Bands, the three-piece have cut their teeth in the studio over the past few months, the result coming in the form of debut album Insula, set for release later this month. The band (Thomas Donoghue, Ken Farrell, Alan Dawson), perform an acoustic set in preparation for their full electric appearance in the same venue on Saturday July 25th alongside The Lions Mane.

In advance of Insula, they’ve also released The Making Of Insula, an episodic fly-on-the-wall look at the making of the album, produced by local photographer Ross Costigan. The episodes are available by visiting myspace.com/southkk.

Doors open at 9:15pm with the first act taking to the stage at 9:30pm. The cost of admission is a recession-busting zero Euro and more details on each act are available on OneTakeSessions.com and KilkennyMusic.com.

South, Walkperson and more at One Take Sessions

The One Take Sessions return this week on Thursday night to Cleere’s Theatre (currently in the process of getting a face lift) where we’ll have four acts on the cards for you – Fia Rua, Roy Shiels, Walkperson (previously appeared in 2008) and locals South, using their One Take Sessions performance in advance of their double-header with The Lions Mane in Cleere’s on July 25th.

As always, the night starts at 9:30pm, admission is free and each act will play a 25 minute set.

We’ll have more on the acts during the week.
