Say Hello To Yes Cadets

YES CADETS arrive in Kilkenny this weekend in promotion of their new single, Lies, released this past Monday.

Yes Cadets were formed in Belfast over the summer of 2008, united by an unhealthy obsession with Canadian indie and French electro. A sharp ear for an off-kilter hook meant it was not long before their brand of synth-tinged art-rock was causing a scene on national radio. Their first single, Canada, received widespread airplay on Radio 1, 6music, RTE and Phantom 105, amongst others, earning them a place in the hearts of the Irish music press as “the most exciting new band in the country”. A self titled EP produced shortly afterwards was hailed by Hot Press and AU as one of the years finest releases.

The band have clocked up performances at Oxegen and Glasgowbury and a host of notable support shows, most recently opening for Canadian alt-rock luminaries Sunset Rubdown. This Saturday night’s show is the band’s first in Kilkenny. It’s free admission, kick off is 10pm and you can check them out on MySpace or listen below.

Meet Pete Molinari

PETE MOLINARI arrives to Kilkenny this weekend for the Rhythm & Roots Festival and is one of the first acts up on this year’s bill, kicking off in Cleere’s tomorrow night (Friday) at 9pm. Tickets are €15. On Saturday afternoon you can find him in The Pumphouse, kicking off at 4pm and if my sources are right then he might be making an appearance in The Cellar Bar tomorrow afternoon in Kilkenny with Edwina Grace broadcasting live from the brewery for a Roots Festival special, featuring some of the acts playing over the weekend.

Pete’s critically acclaimed second album ‘A Virtual Landslide’ was ranked number 18 in Mojo magazine’s ’50 Best Albums Of 2008′. His latest release, ‘Today, tomorrow and forever’ features four classic covers recorded in Nashville with backing from The Jordanaires.

Miracle Bell Destined For Pumphouse, New Album

FOLLOWING THE April release of the lush electro pop single Fit for Love, Kildare band Miracle Bell are set to release their debut album Light Shape Sound on May 7th 2010. Despite being delayed by a bizarre series of Spinal Tapesque incidents, including motorcycle accidents, spray gun strained tendons, a pair of mannequins and a shopping trolley, Light Shape Sound is now ready to be unleashed. An upbeat and perfectly put together piece of electro-synth-pop, the ten track album, written collaboratively between the three members, is about love, life and growing up.

To celebrate the release of the album, Miracle Bell are touring Ireland this month and next, with a stop in Kilkenny this weekend as the band take to the stage upstairs in The Pumphouse from 10pm on what’s turning out to be a very busy night for music in Kilkenny.

We’ve been hanging out on the Miracle Bell MySpace for the week listening to the tunes there and reckon we’ll have to squirrel a few euro away for the new album with their electro mix of tunes going down very well in the office.

Between Reko’s launch, Miracle Bell’s gig, Von Bizmark and The Funeral Suits, now would be the time to break out the cloning machine. Never mind the fact that the Root’s festival is coming up in two weeks…

Free Gig With Von Bizmark Tonight

Von Bizmark Live

VON BIZMARK return to Kilkenny tonight with just one month to go to the release of their second single Address The Silence. The followup to 2009′s summer release of London, Address The Silence marks the first of three planned releases by the band in 2010 and gets its release in shops locally and via iTunes in early April.

The local boys, basing themselves in Dublin, are currently finalising plans for their single tour across the month of April before flying out over to the UK in a few weeks time to start work on their third single.

The band returned to Jam Studios in Kells at the beginning of the year to lay the foundations for their latest single offering and in recent weeks have linked up with two Kilkenny businesses – Event Media and Mycrofilms – to promote and distribute the single, as well as produce a brand new music video for the band. Shot on location in Kilkenny over two days last week, fans of the band will be treated to the video on the day of the single release.

Von Bizmark take to The Pumphouse on Parliament Street tonight from 9:30pm. Admission is free. For more on the band, visit VonBizmark.com.

Chemical Addiction Back In Action, On The Move

Công Ty Sự Kiện

Tonight sees local grungers Chemical Addiction back on the gig scene, joined by Nirvana tribute Boddah and (no strangers to Kilkenny) Sticky Digit. Kick off in The Pumphouse tonight is about 9:30pm, free admission for all, the gig taking place upstairs.

The lads also take to The Chaz Bar on the quays in Wexford on Monday night from 8pm if you’re in the neighbourhood. Listen to some of the Brian Jones EP on the Chemical Addiction MySpace.

Get Pumped with South

Tonight see’s local rock/fusion outfit South take to the stage upstairs in the Pumphouse.

Entry is free with a 10.30pm kickoff. Their CD ‘Insula’ will be available for anyone who wants it. There will also be free copies of The Lions Mane ‘Strands’ to grab for anyone interested.

Rumor has it that there will be a special treat for any Tool fans interested in venturing out.

Free Performance From Von Bizmark

Von Bizmark Live

Keeping up with the flurry of music at local level this weekend, you’ll find Von Bizmark live in The Pumphouse (upstairs) tonight. This is a free show as well so if you’re out for solid live music and you’re working off a budget, make it your business to get to The Pumphouse.

Doors are for 9pm and there’s talk that the band will be on stage by 10, no support act, just the VB lads all the way.

Heritage Centre Hit Kilkenny This Saturday

Heritage Centre

Dublin act Heritage Centre are on their way to Kilkenny for a gig on Saturday night at The Pumphouse. We (or at least I) have been listening to their The City, The Tree & The Fox EP since before its release and would happily give these lads a big thumbs up. They’ve got a great sound that parades its way from the radio-friendly opener of You Are Something to the edgier Death By Science and beyond.

Check their sounds out on MySpace but keep an eye in the press for them down the line, as they gather more traction and more gigs they’ll be marked as one to watch before the release of their upcoming debut album (which has seen near twenty tracks demoed for it already).

Support on Saturday night comes from Neil Coyne, doors for 9:30pm and admission is (quite possibly) five euro.

Saving J Launch ABC Today

Saving J mark the launch of their fifth commercial single release, ABC, with a gig in The Pumphouse tonight in Kilkenny. The single will possibly be the last from the band before their debut album launch this September. Speaking on KCLR earlier in the week, singer Sean Redmond suggested the band are already at work on the second album, but we’ll wait and see how things go following the release of their as-yet-untitled initial offering.

The gig tonight sees doors open around 9:30pm with local support on the stage first. Those going to the gig will get themselves a free physical copy of the CD but if you’re not heading along and want to grab the track you can text ‘music 3306′ to 57501. Texts cost 1 euro.

Visit Saving J on MySpace for more.

River Valley Band, Clive Barnes Join Forces

The River Valley Band

This weekend will see a jam packed night of music take place in The Pumphouse in aid of the Uganda School Project.

On Friday May 29th, we’ll see The River Valley Band, Clive Barnes, Moses Moorhous and i,x,o all take to the stage upstairs in the Pumphouse to play what promises to be a barnstormer of a gig.

The River Valley Band are fresh off the Rhythm and Roots weekend and their recent Andrew’s Lane Theatre headliner with Floyd Soul and The Wolf in Dublin. The local boys are in limber playing shape and ready to unleash a selection of songs from their upcoming album ‘Drunk In The Wine Cellar’. As anyone who has seen them will attest, The River Valley Band are a band to drink, kiss, dance and fight to. For a sample of their wares check out Myspace.com/therivervalleyband

Adopted Kilkenny man Clive Barnes is known as one of the best singer songwriters to ever come from the Irish South East (and any South East for that matter). He has racked up first rate reviews and awards left right and centre and has done fine work touring with the legendary likes of Joe Cocker, Dr. John and Terry Callier. He his currently prepping his latest long player ‘The Ghost Country’ and this gig should see him tuning up for his upcoming 25 date nationwide tour. Check out some of his songs at Myspace.com/Clivebarnesmusic

Moses Moorhous (aka Jack O’Leary) has built up a sterling live reputation in Kilkenny over the past 3 years. Well known for his razor sharp tragicomic lyrics and a voice that sounds like the bastard offspring of John Martyn and Billie Holiday, Moorhous will be getting himself into playing shape for what promises to be another winning summer of dates. Check out Myspace.com/mosesmoorhous for his music.

i,x,o are a duo consisting of David Thompson and Jane Murphy. Playing together as an outfit for over 2 years, they’ve toured the country and worked support slots for Nina Hynes, RSAG and Majella Murphy. They’ve also amassed a fine series of jangly folk and instrumental gems which can be heard on Myspace.com/ixoixoixo

Organised by local man Eddie Brennan, all proceeds from this gig will go directly to the Uganda School Project. The Uganda School Project will see a large group of Irish students travel to Uganda this summer to build much needed schools and facilities. All the bands playing this gig have kindly donated their time and are guaranteeing a night worth donating your money for.
