Rescheduled Plinth Gig Tonight

Plinth

Plinth, who due to car trouble had to postpone their October date, will make it to Kilkenny tonight as they take to the stage in Cleere’s from 9pm tonight.

Plinth was formed when Dan, Brian and Joe, who had been jamming together for months recruited Emmet to provide some accompaniment to Dan with his guitarness. For the first few weeks our jam sessions consisted of covers of bands such as Metallica, Alice in Chains and Tool, and eventually Emmet was appointed High Chancellor of Vocals due to his distinct ability to make noises with his mouth. But we soon grew tired of covering other bands and decided to have a stab at writing our own stuff. Fast-forward a couple of jam sessions later and our first song Knwaaybe was born. Since then we have expanded our horizons and our bumholes to the hugest of extents, branching out past a metal or rock sound into schizophrenic genre-hopping tracks such as Thrike and Skynethwayer. With the recent addition of a synthesizer, our sound has now become much like a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, with odd song structure, time signatures, polyrhythms, harmonies and merging of genres such as metal, jazz, eastern music, drum agus bass, fusion, surf rock and minimalist techno to name a few. In early 2008, Plinth were named as one of five finalists in the Eircom Unsigned Bands Competition with our track Eakombookom.

Tonight marks Plinth’s debut in Kilkenny and admission is a mere five euro including a free copy of their new Tenzuke Chiste EP.

Joining Plinth are South, the local three-piece having gigged recently in Cork with Plinth. Their debut album Insula, well received in local circles, is available on the night and also via the band’s MySpace. Last year’s Battle Of The Bands winners released their debut album this past July alongside The Lions Mane’s Strands, which will also be available tonight.

The Lions Mane, South Attack Dublin Tonight

The Lions Mane release Strands

The Lions Mane and South, two Kilkenny bands on the rise, join forces to play Whelan’s in Dublin tonight to mark the physical launches of Strands (The Lions Mane) and Insula (South). Both bands played a warm-up gig on home soil last weekend, filling the back room of Cleere’s with South distributing advance copies of Insula ahead of tonight’s official launch.

Strands, The Lions Mane’s debut album, had an online release almost two months ago but demand for the album has resulted in a limited edition physical release of the recording, produced by frontman Alan Dawson. Fans of the ‘Mane who cannot make the Dublin gig tonight but wish to get their hands on the CD should leave a comment here or get in touch with us and we’ll make sure one gets placed in your hands.

As mentioned, those who paid a visit to Cleere’s last weekend found they were able to get their hands on Insula, the debut offering from South. The album release comes off the back of South winning last year’s Battle Of The Bands where they put their recording package with The Mill Studios to good use resulting in the release of Insula, the making of which has been documented well by Ross Costigan.

Doors open tonight in Whelan’s at 8pm with Sticky Digit as guests on the bill. Admission is 8 euro. For more, check WhelansLive.com.

The Making Of Insula – Episode 2

Fresh from their appearance at last night’s One Take Sessions, here’s the second installment from South looking their making of debut album Insula.

South & The Lions Mane play Cleere’s Theatre on Saturday July 25th before heading to Whelan’s in Dublin on Friday July 31st to mark launch of debut album Insula.

The Making Of Insula, Episode One

Last year’s winners of the Hype Entertainment Battle Of The Bands, South, are set to release their debut album Insula in a few weeks. During the recording process, Ross Costigan was behind the scenes with the band documenting the process of certain tracks, which have been put together in The Making Of Insula. The band are releasing the footage in episode form in the build up to the album release, the first episode having gone live today.

Once you check out the video, take a listen to South on MySpace. They’ve just announced initial dates for their album tour, starting in Kilkenny on July 25th in Cleere’s before moving on to Whelan’s in Dublin on July 31st and around the country from there.
