Established in 2005 as a portal for Kilkenny musicians and bands to showcase themselves online, KilkennyMusic.com has been through a wide variety of changes in the past six or seven years. We started the Sound System Podcast and were nominated for awards. We got the blog going and were nominated for awards. We’ve received funding from local authorities that spawned a four year series of showcase gigs. We ran a six month long busking competition. We were doing 40 shows a year at our peak but in 2011, we slowed down somewhat, as evident by the news content on the website here.
So What Have We Been Up To
Well, two of us have undertaken different residencies with local authorities where theatre and photography are concerned and in 2012 are now working as part of the Not An Empty Space initiative to further develop professionally in the realm of theatre and photography. Notice there’s no mention of music there.
The reason for the lack of live shows in 2011 has been time, and while we managed a number of shows, it was certainly nowhere near thirty or forty.
Following the Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2011 we went and launched the KIlkenny Events Guide, ultimately what were were looking to integrate into KilkennyMusic.com but rather than focus solely on music, we’ve been covering all events in Kilkenny from arts and theatre to music, film, comedy, food and more, still very much keeping within our remit of promoting what’s happening in Kilkenny.
So Where Do My Gigs And News Go?
From 2012, strict music related news that we receive pertaining to acts or music events in Kilkenny will be carried here on KilkennyMusic.com and on KilkennyEvents.ie. We’re going to start digging through the archives and releasing previously unseen video and unheard audio and you are still free to submit your band’s news or gigs to us to carry on the blog here.
MP3s and new music content outside of Kilkenny will now be carried on IndieSwitch.com and a new wider music blog we’re opening up in February.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is, we haven’t disappeared. We haven’t stopped working. We haven’t stopped attending gigs, sourcing things for bands, fielding phone calls or emails. We haven’t stopped listening to new tracks or digging out old ones. From a content point of view, we’ve just started taking things in a bigger and broader direction locally.
So, if you’ve got something to submit or add, do drop us a line on hello@kilkennymusic.com. We’d love to hear from you and let everyone else know what your band is up to.
