The Arts Office Presents – The Market

The Market

There’s a lot strange looking emails and cloak and dagger poster reveals being done by the Kilkenny Arts Office and they’ve at last released the details of what exactly is going to be happening on Saturday week. Here’s the full low down… (in their own words, like).

On Saturday 5th December Kilkenny County Council Arts Office will host ‘the market’. This is an event certainly not to be missed. For one day only Kilkenny County Council Arts Office will play host to a number of amazing artists, illustrators and makers who will be selling exceptional, original, unique, quirky, and exquisite creations. Our range will include jewellery, ceramics, paintings, crockery, t-shirts, fine art prints, sculptural pieces, cards, origami accessories, hats and vintage inspired headbands. We will also play host to Khans Bookstore offering a select range of books on a variety of topics including gardening, cookery, arts and culture and children’s books. Of course no market would be complete with out offering sustenance to our valued customers. Hence we will also have a range of cakes and cupcakes for sale from the delectable and luscious Swoon Artisan Bakehouse run by Angela Ryan and we will have savouries, scones and breads from the lip-smacking Ladybird Catering run by Alma O’ Farrell. All of the edibles will, of course, be made from the finest ingredients for you to savour and enjoy.

Joel Plaskett joins Fred this Friday

Joel Plaskett (he of Joel Plaskett & The Emergency) joins Corkonians Fred this coming Friday night at Set Theatre.

In the late spring this year Sir Paul McCartney asked Nova Scotian Joel plaskett to open his show at Halifax common.Joel had just released ’3′ his Third solo ‘Triple’ record to rave reviews (‘This is a career defining epic’ Now Magazine) and had a summer of sold out shows ahead of him, including Toronto’s Massey Hall. Six months later he would not only be up for the Polaris Prize (for a second time) , but also be nominated for 4 Canadian folk music awards, “Contemporary Album of the Year”, “Solo Artist of the Year”, ‘Pushing the Boundaries Award’ & “Best Producer”.That’s some year.

‘Plaskett makes his case to follow names like Young, Lightfoot and Cohen’ – Chart Attack

Joel is a star on the rise. The most tangible evidence of this is that at a time when other artists are experiencing declining sales from release to release, his triple recording “three” has already outsold any of his current releases.

Joel will spend the winter producing records for Fellow Nova scotian David Myles and Californian gem – Steve Poltz – All after a short trip to the U.K & Debut trip to Ireland where he will play a show at Whelans in Dublin on November 26th, Then on to Kilkenny to play the Set Theatre on Friday 27th, before going down to the peoples republic where he has been invited to join the bill at the Cork opera house with Cork’s finest ‘Fred’ on Saturday 28th of November, and headlining The Roundy ,Cork on Sunday 29th November.

Tickets for the gig on Friday night are available from Langtons priced €15

Homelights Tour Reaches Kilkenny In December

James Yorkston

James Yorkston, Adrian Crowley and Alasdair Roberts arrive in Kilkenny on Thursday December 3rd as part of the Homelights Tour 2009 with Word Of Mouth productions and Problems At The Pancake House.

James Yorkston was an integral early member of the Fence Collective whose reach across contemporary music continues to lengthen: King Creosote, The Aliens, KT Tunstall, The Beta Band. Yorkston is primarily a singer-songwriter, although he also tackles a variety of traditional songs, learned from singers such as Anne Briggs, Dick Gaughan, Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Lal Waterson etc. His quoted main influences are Anne Briggs, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Michael Hurley and Can, In August 2009, James released his sixth album for Domino Records – Folk Songs in 2009.

Dublin-based and Galway-native singer-songwriter Adrian Crowley has released several albums to date while remaining firmly under the critical radar Long Distance Swimmer finding itself shortlisted for the 2008 Choice Music Prize [Update from Nat: His newest 'Season Of The Sparks' is now available on Chemikal Underground Records]. Recorded in a week with collaborators including James Yorkston, this is a lo-fi, high-intensity collection of acoustic musings that suggest Van Morrison singing with Red House Painters. Crowley’s rich brown croon inevitably recalls Nick Drake or Tim Buckley. Two-thirds of the songs have an oceanic theme, but these are no sea shanties: Star of the Harbour and Brother at Sea evoke the opiate slow-core of Low or Codeine. Adrian last visited Kilkenny at the 2009 Arts Festival, playing alongside Low in St. Canice’s Cathedral.

Alasdair Roberts is a Scottish folk musician who released a number of albums under the name Appendix Out before recording under his own name from 2001. While attending a Will Oldham concert in 1995, he offered a demo tape to the American singer, and a contract with US label Drag City soon followed. After three albums with the ever-changing Appendix Out, Roberts recorded his first solo album, The Crook Of My Arm. This album consisted almost entirely of solo vocals and guitar in marked contrast to the increasingly experimental sound of the Appendix Out records. He has since collaborated with friends and label-mates Will Oldham and Jason Molina, both playing on their albums and on the one-off album, Amalgamated Sons Of Rest. He also played hurdy-gurdy on the soundtrack of the 2003 film Young Adam. This was later released under the title Lead Us Not Into Temptation by David Byrne. Roberts is noted for both his own compositions and recitations of traditional songs, including on his album of traditional death ballads, No Earthly Man and in 2006 featured in the BBC documentary Folk Britannia. His last album “Spoils” was released in May 2009.

Tickets are €15 and you can book them online at Tickets.ie or pay on the door on the night. It all takes place from 9pm in Cleere’s on Thursday December 3rd.

Fionn O’Hargain Wins Kilkenny 400 Busker 2009

Fionn O'HargainEarlier this afternoon we took off to KCLR 96FM and The Edwina Grace Show to annouce the winner of the Kilkenny 400 Busker 2009 competition. Seven months on from our starting point, Fionn O’Hargain (Kilkenny City) was announced as the winner, scooping a €1,000 prize in the proccess, offered by the organisers of Kilkenny 400 and Kilkenny Borough Council.

Speaking live on air after being announced as the winner, Fionn says he hopes to put his prize into some new sound equipment or towards a PA system. He “might invest some of it in the post office” but he also “owes the people of Kilkenny to keep on going”, an indication that he doesn’t intend to stop busking at the weekends.

We first met Fionn back in round three on one of the wettest rounds of the competition, performing Radiohead’s Karma Police outside Winstons on Kieran Street and while he made it through the online semi-final voting stage, he opted for Oasis over the Stone Roses for his performance piece for the final, held on October 30th last.

We’ll try and get some audio from the station for those of you who missed the segment but for now we’ll say congratulations to Fionn, commiserations to the other finalists in Beef Supreme, Annie Chambers, Vicky Day, Quintet Tarantino and Sean Watmore, all of whom, bar the wildcard entry, had already won a €200 prize as part of the competition.

You can watch all the videos from the competition on KilkennyMusicTV on YouTube. That also brings our involvement in the Kilkenny 400 celebrations to a close, the overall celebrations drawing to a close tomorrow with the official opening of the new parade and canal square. For more details, check Kilkenny400.ie.

New Works On The Way From Chemical Addiction

Chemical Addiction

Apologies to Ben for the near ten-day delay in getting around to this one, but with their December appearance in Cleere’s Theatre looming, Chemical Addiction are getting set to unleash some new material with two discs coming in the space of a few months.

Up first is the much-anticipated Brian Jones EP which gets a limited release next month. On the boil a long time now, the trio of Ben Keating, Danny Pearson and Ciwi McCarthy returned to the studio a few weeks back to link up with Davey Holland and producer Darragh Butler for three days of recording in Broderick’s studios in Kilkenny.

“Working with Davey and Darragh was such a pleasure” says frontman Ben Keating. “We recorded three brand new tracks in MDMA, Daily Basis and Timewaster and will be heading the bill at the Trig Promotions christmas party next month where we’ll be releasing the EP. The whole operation was very professional from start to finish, but there was no pressure and we definitely had a laugh during the whole thing.”

While they might have had a laugh during the recording, it’s great to see another Kilkenny act getting serious about the recording and production of their sounds. From conversations with Darragh (Butler, ex-Kerbdog) and friends of the group, it sounds like they were certainly put through their paces in the studio with the result being a serious step up in quality and delivery for a band who have continued to go from strength to strength with their music over the last few years.

We’re awaiting a few sneaky tracks from the mix ourselves but until then you can check out their tunes on MySpace and mark December 19th in your diary as the date to catch them, and the new EP, live.
