Daily Video: Saving J ‘Kick Off’

Myself and Alan Slattery got to work with Saving J recently on putting the video for ‘Kick Off’ together. Shot over the course of ten hours in the Watergate Theatre (yes, we stopped for lunch too), here is the result. Expect the official single release for ‘Kick Off’ within the next few weeks.

Hope you’re enjoying your Bank Holiday weekend!

Happy Valley Music Festival Kicks Off Today

The 3rd annual Happy Valley music festival in Thomastown (Eddie Murphy’s pub) kicks off today and continues right through Saturday and Sunday. Day tickets are €25 and weekend tickets are €40.

If comedy isn’t your thing, drop out to Thomastown to catch the likes of Engine Alley, Super Extra Bonus Party, Band On An Island, Ilya K, Kopek, Jaded Sun, Indie Kids Can’t Dance, The Rye (on tonight) Myp Et Jeep and too many more bands to mention!

All details should be available on the MySpace at myspace.com/eddiemurphyspub.

One Take Sessions Live Tonight

The fifth of the 2008 series of the One Take Sessions takes place in Cleere’s Theatre tonight, just in time for the start of the comedy festival.

Acts on the bill tonight include Kieran Byrne (Kilkenny / Dublin), Ken McGuire (Kilkenny) and Siobhan O’Donnell. Though previously advertised (and as of lunchtime today), Alan Dawson won’t be joining us in Cleere’s tonight.

The One Take Sessions are free (as always) and will kick off at the slightly later time tonight of around 9:45pm.

Daily Video: Newton Faulkner ‘I Need Something’

I certainly wouldn’t object to seeing Newton Faulkner at the One Take Sessions, but while that might be a bit away yet, here he is with a live recording of ‘I Need Something’. I’ve been burning a hole in Faulkner’s ‘Hand Built By Robots’ of late, if you don’t already have a copy of the album then I’d suggest seeking one out as it’s a great listen.

As for the One Take Sessions, well, they’re tonight so see you there…

No Podcast Tonight

Yeah… it’s happened. After a few months of a streak, changing up show hosts temporarily, even flying solo on one or two occasions, it’s finally come to this. No podcast tonight.

It’s my own fault really as I left all the mics and access to ProTools behind me at a gig and never sorted anything out in between. We would have spent a bit of time hyping the One Take Sessions that take place tomorrow night (Thursday) in Kilkenny; some chat about The Skins who will be joining us in two weeks time alongside Laminate; more news on the Chemical Addiction and Atrax Mantis front; news of a new artist agency that’s been developed and gone into stealth launch in Kilkenny; talk of Joe Cleere bagging himself €8,000 of an ArtLinks bursary (Joe joins us at the ‘Sessions next month) and loads more.

Of course, it’s all just going to have to wait until either the weekend or next week altogether. I’m safely betting on next Wednesday.

Yes, I broke the good run we’ve had.

Nuts.

Extra Tommy Tiernan Show This Weekend

Tommy Tiernan

Tickets have gone on sale today for an additional Tommy Tiernan show this weekend given all previously advertised shows have sold out for this weekend’s Cat Laughs comedy festival. If you’re lucky, you might be able to grab tickets for a 6pm show in the Newpark Hotel on the ‘Comer Road featuring Tommy, the Umbilical Brothers and Jarlath Regan.

Tickets are €28 and are available by calling into the box office or phoning 056 77 63837.

Daily Video: Dirty Epics ‘The Cure’

A great song from a great band who are going to be joining us for the One Take Sessions on June 19th in Cleere’s. Here’s Dirty Epics with ‘The Cure’. Cracking video as well put together with the aid of NYU Tisch student Alison Grasso and Hot Press.

The back of the week is firmly broken sir!

Sound System 56? Maybe Tomorrow.

Sound System Podcast 56 *might* be recording tomorrow. I say might, because being the genius that I am, I left two bags of mics and every small cable I have under the sun behind me at a gig in Ballina at the weekend. Given I didn’t fancy an eight hour round-trip to have the mics collected, they’re due to arrive in Kilkenny tomorrow morning. If that’s the case, Sound System 56 goes on as planned!

We’re heading into the Bank Holiday weekend, there’s plenty of music and comedy to be had in Kilkenny but if you’ve got anything you would like to add to the show in terms of comments, plugs for your gigs (wherever you are in the country) or little golden nuggets of information, then drop a line on the email to podcast@kilkennymusic.com.

You can listen to past shows over at SoundSystemPodcast.com.

Daily Video: Joe Cocker ‘Summer In The City’

I prefer the Lovin’ Spoonful version myself, but here’s Joe Cocker with an optimistic rendition of ‘Summer In The City’. The summer in Kilkenny officially disappeared yesterday. Though they are saying that Friday should be good. Yes, we’re turning into a weather service.

Enjoy your Tuesday…

The Skins To Join Laminate For Friday 13th

The Skins

Dublin-based grunge rock three piece ‘The Skins’ are joining the bill for our Friday 13th show in Cleere’s Theatre. The band are Aaron Gaffey on guitar/vocals, Keith O’ Neill on bass and Richie Mason on drums. On the go since 2004, they’ve gigged plenty around the country and are no wild strangers to Kilkenny. Calling their music “riff based alternative stoner rock, with a mixture of time signatures”, you’ll be able to catch them in action in Cleere’s Theatre on Parliament Street in Kilkenny on Friday June 13th.

Check out the band’s music and backround on The Skins Myspace.
