Super Extra Prize Winners

Super Extra Bonus Party

Super Extra Bonus Party, as featured recently on Sound System Podcast 41, were announced tonight as the 2007 winners of the Choice Music Prize, the award following a great year for the band on the back of their self titled release, ‘Super Extra Bonus Party’.

Once again, I think, the Choice Music Prize and judged have trumped up another top class act and another surprise to the masses. The SEBP crew topped the judges voting ahead of Adrian Crowley (Long Distance Swimmer), early favourite Cathy Davey (Tales Of Silversleeve), Delorentos (In Love With Detail), Dry County (Unexpected Falls), The Flaws (Achieving Vagueness), David Geraghty (Kill Your Darlings), Kila (Gambler’s Ballet), Roisin Murphy (Overpowered) and Stanley Super 800 (Louder & Clearer).

No doubt there’ll be a flurry of activity from Irish music bloggers there on the night but from ourselves at KKM, fair play to Super Extra Bonus Party, well deserved and here’s to a terrific 2008.

You can can the band in action in Kilkenny this weekend as they take to the stage in Eddie Murphy’s, Thomastown, with Band On An Island and New York Fashion Week as part of the Leap Party.

Coronas Return To Kilkenny

The Coronas

Fresh from the success of their hit single “San Diego Song” which has spent a staggering 16 weeks in the Irish top 40, the Coronas are back with their new single “Grace, Don’t Wait!” which is taken from their stunning debut album “Heroes and Ghosts”. A recent string of gigs in the Village, two sold out shows in The Button Factory, and appearances on the Late Late Show, The Podge and Rodge Show, and Other Voices saw this indie four-piece take the Irish music scene by storm in 2007, culminating in their nomination for a Meteor Award, along with what’s been described in the press as a “sterling performance” at the Meteors.

This weekend sees them return to Kilkenny once again, the band taking to the stage in Cleere’s Theatre on Saturday night with doors from 9pm. The lads are in The Stables in Mullingar tonight before Cleere’s tomorrow – all that before embarking on a 9-date single tour throughout March. Full details on their MySpace.

With influences including Radiohead and the Beatles, their album “Heroes or Ghosts” has enjoyed rave reviews and has been lodged in the Irish charts since its release in October. Described by HotPress as “walking a soulful line between Jeff Buckley and the Libertines”, the Coronas have most definitely arrived and it seems that if “Grace, Don’t Wait!” is any indication of what’s to come then it is inevitable that they are set for even greater things in 2008.
