‘Vinyl Sells Out Three In A Row

The Devious Theatre Company were virtual unknowns this time a year ago in Kilkenny. Taking a bold step in running their self written, directed and produced comedy that is Heart Shaped Vinyl at the time was a bit of a risk. The group went for a three night run with limited publicity and little advertising. Heart Shaped VinylA reasonable opening night, a busy middle night and packed final night left feedback ringing in the ears of the group that carries through one year on.

Proof of that lies in this week. The show has been running to the public since Wednesday night with the opening night selling out and taking with it all the tickets for Thursday night. Word from the group also tells us that tickets for tonight’s performance are also sold out with a chance of one or two cancellations (if you’re interested in going tonight). The show hits its third night tonight and three sell out shows in a row would give you an indication that this is definitely in the “one to watch” category.

Heart Shaped Vinyl finishes its Kilkenny run this Saturday night and it is not known whether the show will return to Kilkenny in the future with The Devious Theatre Company hoping to travel to Dublin and beyond with discussions underway to tour the production overseas in 2008. Do yourself a favour and immerse yourself in two hours of genuinely comedic and honest theatre but the show slips from your fingers altogether.

Myp Et Jeep, Cry Yuma Off, More Gigs, Mantua Project

Myp Et Jeep

Another cancellation story in today as we’ve had to shift the Myp Et Jeep / Cry Yuma gig from July 7th. The gig had been booked earlier in the year for both bands but the lads in ‘Jeep are off to put the feet up at Oxegen for the weekend while Cry Yuma have lost their drummer and will have to put off their appearance until September or afterwards.

Both bands have new recordings on the way with Myp Et Jeep‘s new album expected shortly while Cry Yuma are off to Windmill Lane to start laying down some new tracks as well.

The cancellation is good and bad. Bad of course that we’ve to move the gig and miss two great bands but good in a sense that we’ve a weekend off. We’ve had our busiest month gig-wise having had one weekend off since May (having done the 12th, 19th, skip, June Bank Holiday weekend, June 9th, June 16th, June 21st, June 23rd and all this week June 27th to June 30th with Heart Shaped Vinyl). Thats seven gigs, 16 acts and four nights of theatre rolled up in the last few weeks. Rather than risk burning out I reckon the weekend off will be nice and we’ll reschedule both bands for later in the year.

With the 7th off, we’re going to be back on the live front with the One Take Sessions on July 12th in Cleere’s Theatre before the KKM crew head to the Mantua Project July 13th/14th in Roscommon for a weekend of music. Anyone going?

No Police Tribute Saturday Night

The Police Tribute (The Polis) that was supposed to be going on in The Zoo this weekend won’t be happening, one of the lads in the band can’t make it or so it seems. No word on a possible return date but it sure isn’t going ahead anyway. What is going ahead though is the Pantera/Slipknot tribute with Tampora and Skinticket playing The Zoo this Sunday avo at 4pm. Its all-ages, ten bucks in for the full day. By all accounts the Slipknot tribute should be a cracker.

Make Don’t Stop Believin’ Number 1!

If you were listening to the Ray Foley show earlier on you’ll have heard that he’s trying to get Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey back into the charts and won’t play it until its charted. In a great move, the plugs to get downloading have (as of this afternoon) driven Journey up to number 2 in the iTunes charts in Ireland.

The song (at least in my opinion) is one of the greatest and deserves to get back to number one. Due to its recent involvement in a certain TV show which shall remain nameless for fear of inducing any spoilers I’ve been ranting and raving about it for the past few weeks (the song that is) and its been on overdrive here in the office.

To be honest its actually blaring out in the office here. Who wants to listen to Rihanna and Jay-Z? Get Journey to number 1! It started out on Monday going to number 10, 9 on Tuesday, up to 4 midweek and its at 2 today… go on. Grab an iTunes download of it!!

Heart Shaped Vinyl Opens In Kilkenny

The Devious Theatre Company (through which there is a KilkennyMusic.com connection with myself and Ross part of the show) opens tonight in Cleere’s Theatre and runs 8pm nightly up to an including this Saturday night.

Dubbed a ‘theatrical mix tape’, the show looks at changing relationships (and not so changing music) through each of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and present day in Ireland. Covering the showband era, the punk scene, blind dates, riverside drinking, makeups, breakups, patchups, the show is peppered with quality musical references that you’ll be able to connect with whatever your ages. Add a slice of romance, a splash of comedy and an experienced cast the show is sure to delight audiences this week.

For full details, check out the group’s website at DeviousTheatre.com or drop to the Devious Theatre MySpace. By all accounts, ticket sales are busy with some still available for Friday night and Saturday night. Tickets can be reserved by calling to Cleere’s Theatre directly (on Parliament Street in Kilkenny, directly opposite the Watergate Theatre) or by phoning +353 56 77 62573.

Those Sessions Videos Before The Weekend

Those additional One Take Sessions videos from last Thursday night in Cleere’s will be live before the weekend. We’ve also got the next Sound System Podcast to fire online before the weekend too, hopefully making it to the web on Friday morning. We’ve been on a bit of a podbreak of late with two shows currently in the line for upload from the June Bank Holiday weekend and the latest One Take Sessions.

Don’t forget that if you’re interested in booking the ‘Sessions to check out the One Take Sessions website or drop us a line on sessions@kilkennymusic.com.

New Video For Homepage (Diarmuid Comerford)

For those of you on the ole RSS feed, take a look at the KilkennyMusic.com homepage for a video from last Thursday night’s One Take Sessions. The clip (roughly four minutes) is of Wexfordian Diarmuid Comerford performing the crowd pleaser that is ‘I’m Not Lucifer’.

Diarmuid is going to return to the One Take Sessions on October 25th, booking now open on that date with two slots left available.

Alternatively, check out the latest video on KilkennyMusicTV (YouTube) where you’ll also find footage from the previous weekend (June 16th) with Laminate in action and some older One Take Sessions clips.

Cold Truth – The Guggenheim Grotto Tonight

The Guggenheim Grotto

The first time the Guggenheim Grotto played Kilkenny it was a real treat. They’d been down a few months before to do an instore appearance to about 6 people to promote the new album, when they arrived in Cleere’s they packed the place out, seating removed for pure safety reasons and fantastic night of music. The second night was not much different. Tonight will hopefully complete a hat-trick of terrific performances by one of Ireland’s best kept musical secrets.

Ray D’Arcy and a few other heads at Today FM seem to be pretty big fans of the lads and there’s plenty of reason for it. The music, the lyrics, the openness of the songs, the approachability of the band, the sheer professionalism of each of them and the huge amount of talent that comes pouring out when they hit the stage…. it all adds up.

Waltzing Alone is one of those albums you have to listen to from start to finish – there aren’t any tracks you skip on the album, each of them just that good. With a few stints in the US behind them since their last appearance in Kilkenny last August and a new album waiting in the wings there should be plenty of new material on offer tonight.

Dublin’s Pal Steelo opens the show at 10pm before the ‘Grotto take to the stage after half past. For ticket holders it is advised to get there when the doors open at 9:30pm and get yourself settled, seating is limited in Cleere’s so come in, grab a drink – you won’t have long to wait!

Pre-gig ticket sales cease at 6pm so if you want yours come grab one from Cleere’s before 6 this evening, any remainder will be moved to the door and sold on a first-come-first-served basis. Take a listen to ‘Cold Truth’ from the Lifetime In Heat EP below and see you tonight!
